How is Costa Rica's financial system doing?

The resilience of Costa Rica's financial system has been evident despite challenges such as the fiscal crisis and the pandemic. During a recent Coopenae seminar, experts highlighted the robustness of this sector, which is key to the country's economic stability.

Sovereign debt quality

Costa Rica's sovereign debt ratings by major credit rating agencies are as follows:

  • Moody's: Ba3 (last review: September 2024).
  • Standard & Poor's: BB- (last review: October 2024).

As of April 2024, the Central Government's debt reached ¢28,785,401 million (US$56.504 billion), with 73.4% domestic debt and 26.6% external debt.
Projections:

  • 2024: ¢29,992,009 million (61.0% of GDP).
  • 2025: ¢32,495,760 million (62.0% of GDP).

These figures underscore significant fiscal challenges for the country, which will require sustainable debt management strategies.

New investment opportunities in the Commercial Stock Exchange (Bolcomer)

Costa Rica's stock market continues to expand its offerings. Upcoming additions to Bolcomer's portfolio include:

  • Marriott Manuel Antonio (coming soon).
  • Marriott Escalante (already available).
  • Participations in Residences W, managed by Transcomer Puesto de Bolsa S.A., under the OICO-MACAB scheme.

These investment options enhance the country's appeal to both local and foreign investors.

Costa Rica: A top destination for retirees

According to International Travel, Costa Rica remains the top choice for retirees. The Robb Report highlights Residences W in partnership with Marriott as a luxury option for those seeking a high-quality lifestyle.

Good news for dollar holders in Costa Rica

In recent days, the US dollar has shown a slight recovery against the Costa Rican colón, which could benefit those with savings in dollars. While the currency outlook remains volatile, this rebound is encouraging for dollar investors.
