What is Microsoft's metaverse? Connecting the physical world with its digital twins, and further shifting towards the metaverse.

What is Microsoft's Metaverse? https://youtu.be/Qw6UCwCt4bE The global metaverse market is expected to reach nearly $400 billion in the next two years with virtual assets like NFTs and hardware driving the gains, according to Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Metaverse, the combination of the prefix “meta” (implying transcending) with the word “universe”, describes a hypothetical synthetic environment linked to the physical world. The word ‘metaverse’ was first coined in a piece of speculative fiction named Snow Crash, written by Neal Stephenson in 1992.

In this novel, Stephenson defines the metaverse as a massive virtual environment parallel to the physical world, in which users interact through digital avatars. Since this first appearance, the metaverse as a computer generated universe has been defined through vastly diversified concepts, such as lifelogging, collective space in virtuality, embodied internet/ spatial Internet, a mirror world, an omniverse: a venue of simulation and collaboration.

To realise the metaverse, technologies other than the Internet, social networks, gaming, and virtual environments, should be taken into considerations. The advent of Augmented Reality (AR) and VR, high-speed networks and edge computing , artificial intelligence, and hyperledgers (or blockchain), serve as the building blocks of the metaverse.

Today I share in this space a video of Microsoft's Metaverse, the third company by market capitalization in a context where the giant of Bill Gates seems to be winning the battle against Mark Zuckerberg of Meta. As of October 2022 Microsoft has a market cap of $1.716 Trillion. This makes Microsoft the world's third most valuable company by market cap. The market capitalization, commonly called market cap, is the total market value of a publicly traded company's outstanding shares and is commonly used to measure how much a company is worth. Meta Platforms (Facebook) has a market cap of $344.89 Billion. This makes Meta Platforms (Facebook) the world's 13th most valuable company by market cap today.

The market cap of bitcoin (BTC) at the moment of writing this episode is $370.66 Billion.
