Melaleuca alternifolia, commonly known as Narrow-leaved Paperbark, Narrow-leaved Tea-tree, Narrow-leaved Ti-tree, or Snow-in-summer has been revered for its cleansing and regenerative properties, especially for the skin. Composed of more than ninety different compounds, melaleuca has limitless therapeutic applications.
Leaves are linear, 10–35 mm long and 1 mm wide. White flowers occur in spikes 3–5 cm long. Small woody, cup-shaped fruit are 2–3 mm in diameter. It promotes cleansing and purity.

Ubicada a 543 kilómetros de Cabo Blanco en la costa Pacífica, la isla del Coco fue en los viejos tiempos un refugio para piratas, mercaderes, balleneros e incluso colonizadores. Hoy es conocida por sus tesoros naturales que incluyen al peculiar y amenazado tiburón martillo, así como ballenas jorobadas, delfines nariz de botella, tortugas carey y una variedad de especies de coral, solo para mencionar algunos. El famoso oceanógrafo francés Jacques Cousteau calificó a la isla del Coco como "la isla más hermosa del mundo".
Pero la costa Caribe tiene sus propias maravillas también. Por ejemplo, el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo es único debido a las sorprendentes especies que se encuentran allí. En únicamente 5 kilómetros cuadrados de arrecife de coral, los científicos han descubierto 600 especies de moluscos, el 10% de las cuales son únicas en el mundo. En general, los océanos de Costa Rica albergan al menos 6,777 especies, las cuales representan el 3.5% de las especies conocidas en el planeta y también convierten al país en un verdadero paraíso para los amantes del buceo. El IMC, no es el único indicador de sobrepeso y obesidad pero si es muy importante, es por ello que hoy les compartimos en Feliz y Saludable un importante estudio y un artículo de prensa del principal periódico del país.
Si tomáramos el índice de masa corporal (IMC, relación entre peso y estatura de una persona) de todos los ticos, lo sumáramos y lo dividiéramos entre la población, el resultado sería un tico con sobrepeso.
Sí, aunque hay costarricenses que están en un peso normal y personas con trastornos alimentarios que tienen el peso muy por debajo del ideal, el poder del sobrepeso se impone.
El IMC es un indicador de cuán en riesgo está la salud de alguien. Sus valores ideales son entre 20 y 25; si esa cifra es mayor, hay sobrepeso.
Para calcularlo, se divide el peso entre la estatura elevada al cuadrado. Es decir, si usted pesa 78 kilos y mide 1,70 metros, multiplique 1,70 por 1,70. El producto es 2,89. Luego divida sus 78 kilos entre 2,89. El resultado es 26,98: usted tiene sobrepeso.
El IMC del tico promedio está en 26,5, y el 62% de la población tiene sobrepeso u obesidad. En 1996, solo el 46% tenía sobrepeso.
Este es uno de los resultados del Reporte de Estado Global de Salud 2014 sobre Enfermedades no Transmisibles, presentado este lunes por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), que tomó los datos de 194 países.
El sobrepeso se da por igual en ticos y ticas. El IMC promedio del hombre es de 26,4 mientras que el de la mujer es de 26,7.
La cifra es preocupante, pero similar a la de América Central. Nicaragua tiene 26,9; Honduras, 26,4, y Guatemala, 26,5.
Causas. Para especialistas de la Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) hay dos grandes “vicios” que hacen de Costa Rica un país con sobrepeso: la mala alimentación y el sedentarismo.
“Tenemos un alto consumo de grasas, bajo consumo de frutas y verduras, muchas bebidas altamente azucaradas y mucho sodio. Esto enferma”, manifestó Rocío Sánchez, de la Dirección de Proyección de Servicios de Salud de la CCSS, al presentar el Estudio de carga de enfermedad en Costa Rica, en octubre pasado.
Una investigación del 2013 de la CCSS había revelado que el 60% de los ticos era sedentario y se exponía a males crónicos.
“Nacimos para movernos, y cada vez somos más sedentarios; le damos calorías al cuerpo, pero no quemamos toda esa energía”, expresó Edward Matarrita, educador físico de la CCSS.
Más datos. El informe señala que Costa Rica es el país del Istmo con más diabetes (10,5% de los adultos) e hipertensión (31,5%).
Por otra parte, también es el país donde se dan más muertes por enfermedades crónicas: 83% de los fallecimientos en el país son por estos males.
Dichas noticias no son del todo malas. Este tipo de enfermedades son las principales causas de muerte en países donde el sistema de salud es eficaz y ha logrado reducir drásticamente los decesos por virus, diarreas o gripes.
Incluso, en Costa Rica la mayor parte de las muertes se da en mayores de 70 años; es el país de Centroamérica con menos muertes prematuras.
¿Qué hacer? Existe una serie de medidas que pueden tomarse para tener mejor salud.
La estrategia incluye una alimentación saludable con cinco porciones de frutas y verduras al día, que evite los dulces y limite al máximo las comidas fritas. Además, deben hacerse al menos 30 minutos de actividad física al día o 150 minutos por semana (correr, trotar, caminar, bailar, practicar algún deporte). Los especialistas son enfáticos en que no se debe fumar, y si se consume alcohol, debe hacerse de forma moderada.
“Hay responsabilidad en cada sector, las autoridades de Salud tienen su cuota, pero cada quien debe mejorar su salud personal”, afirmó Margarita Claramunt, del Ministerio de Salud. Fuente: La Nación 20 de enero de 2015.

Citrus limon, essential oil powerhouse is cold pressed from lemon rinds to preserve its delicate nature and potent properties. Lemon is known as a powerful aromatic, topical, and internal cleanser and can be used to compliment many other oils. Diffusing lemon in a room can cleanse the air and uplift mood. It can also be used on surfaces throughout the home as a non-toxic cleaning booster.
Some of the therapeutic properties of lemongrass include: anti-bacterial, anti-biotic, antiseptic, anti-viral, astringent, diuretic and disinfectant.Lemon oil has many uses.
It is a powerful antiseptic, and is cleansing to the environment (home or office),
It has antiseptic-like properties, and contains compounds that have been studied for their effects on immune functions.
It may serve as an insect repellent,
It can be an effective means to improve circulation.
It is a considered to be an excellent antibacterial agent.
It may be helpful for respiratory infections or inflammation, and,
Its pleasant, sweet aroma can be uplifting, to lighten any mood.
Other uses for lemon oil
Mix 6 drops of lemon oil and 6 drops of the Purify oil blend in a spray bottle, along with distilled water, shake well to disperse the oils and spray into the air, to help freshen the air in the bathroom.
To remove gum, oil, grease spots or crayon, rub with 1-2 drops of lemon oil.
Use 1 drop of lemon oil to add flavor to baked goods or beverages.
For homemade lemonade, mix 2 drops of lemon oil, 2 tablespoons of honey and two cups of pure water in a blender. Adjust the amount of each ingredient to suit your own taste.
For corns, callouses or bunions, rub on a drop of lemon oil, mornings and evenings.
To clean and increase the shelf life of fresh fruit, fill a bowl with cool water and 2-3 drops of lemon oil. Drop your cleaned fruit into the water and stir. Be sure all surfaces of the fruit contact the lemon water. If you have an apple, and only want to eat half of it at that time, you can also put a drop of lemon oil on the part you want to save. It will prevent oxidation (browning) of the fruit, and adds a really nice flavor to the apple.
To sterilize cutting boards, counter tops, cupboards and table tops, add 2-3 drops of lemon oil to water and spray them. Or, you could just add the oil to a pan of water, soak a cloth in it for wiping down surfaces.
To disinfect your dishcloth and kill germs, soak it overnight in a bowl of water with a drop of lemon oil.
Add a drop of lemon oil to your dishwasher before the wash cycle.
Rub a drop of lemon oil on your hands after using a public bathroom.
Use a paper towel, soaked with several drops of lemon oil, to sanitize bathroom fixtures.
Place a drop of lemon oil on cold sores, herpes or other mouth ulcers, to lessen pain and aid healing. (What also works wonders for this is melissa oil)
Put a drop of lemon oil on gums that are bleeding becaus of gingivitis or tooth extraction.
Put a drop of lemon oil on oily skin or acne, to balance sebaceous glands (oil glands). It offers other benefits for the skin, and can be added to lotions or creames to improve skin tone and texture.
Rub several drops of lemon oil on cellulite, to improve circulation and help eliminate waste from the cells.
Rub two drops of lemon oil topically onto the feet, to clear athlete's foot.
Rub several drops of lemon oil on varicose veins, to improve circulation and relieve pressure on the veins.
Rub a drop of lemon oil on a wart, morning and night, until it disappears.
Rub a drop of lemon oil to clean a butcher's block or other cutting surfaces.
Put 10-15 drops of lemon oil in each gallon of carpet cleaning solution, to help pull out stains and brighten the rug. This also leaves a fresh smell in the room. Mixing several drops of lemon oil into baking soda, and sprinkling it over the carpet before vacuuming is also very effective. (It works for your dog, too; although I don't recommend the vacuuming part. A brush works just fine.)

Con la caída de Franco en España, se inició hace muchos años una oferta en las principales ciudades españolas como en Chueca-Madrid, Gaixample en Barcelona y Sitges en las afueras de Barcelona. Lo interesante de esta propuesta es que podés combinar tu viaje de placer, con otros intereses de la pareja gay, ya sean culturales, gastronómicos, espirituales o religiosos, hobbies, deportes y profesionales, compras, o simplemente visitar a tu familia o amistades que podás tener en todo el mundo.

Spencer Wells, director del proyecto "Genographic", impulsado por la National Geographic Society, y biólogo molecular de profesión, ha recorrido el mundo durante un año en busca de poblaciones indígenas remotas, como los bosquimanos del Kalahari o los chuchis de Siberia. Gracias a ello, y en colaboración con sus colegas, ha trazado un mapa genético mundial en el que se ha dibujado una línea de descendencia de 2.000 generaciones.
El Dr Wells viaja a uno de los lugares de mayor diversidad étnica en el mundo: el barrio de Queens en Nueva York, un verdadero crisol de razas, aproximadamente la mitad de sus 2,2 millones de habitantes provienen de países extranjeros y en el barrio se hablan más de 150 idiomas. Junto al equipo del Proyecto Genográfico recogen muestras de ADN entre los vecinos de Queens para conectarlos con sus antiguos ancestros: los primeros habitantes de América, los europeos y los habitantes del sudeste asiático, que fueron los primeros grupos en salir de África. Por medio de gráficos generados por computadora, Nat Geo viaja al pasado miles de años para presenciar las migraciones de sus antepasados y revela además el linaje de cada uno de ellos y los desplazamientos que se fueron dando hasta llegar al lugar en el que viven actualmente.

Situated near the equator, Cocos Island is a tropical island paradise with a warm and humid climate. Average temperature is between 24-30°C. The island has beautiful blue skies, yet heavy rain falls are possible throughout the year.
