Everything ends. You can agree on good, bad, very bad and very good emperors in the Roman Empire. Yesterday October 30, 2022, the fourth largest democracy in the world -Brazil- chose an ex-convict president. Nothing happens. Bad rulers have always been and always will be.

The learning is that we are all connected and what happens in a country will affect our lives or those of our descendants.

Much of humanity are descendants of the Greeks, Romans, barbarians, even the Vikings. As shown by the timeline from the last Emperor of the undivided Roman Empire to the present day.

He succeeded in a crucial war against the Goths, as well as in two civil wars, and was instrumental in establishing the creed of Nicaea as the doctrine for Christianity. Theodosius was the last emperor to rule the entire Roman Empire before its administration was split between two separate courts (one western, the other eastern).

Improve your physical and mental health: How to increase your monthly income without burnout for more income in the multi-level industry.

How to increase your monthly income without burnout. The original article has been translated and summarized by Rafael Vilagut. La Nación Sunday October 30, 2022 San Jose Costa Rica. "83,675 Costa Ricans share their time in more than one job". This is According to the National Institute of Statistics INEC and its latest employment survey ECE.

Health reaches the limit. Costa Ricans opt for teaching, entrepreneurship, and night work.  The key rule. The law allows workers another work activity as long as there is no conflict with the first job.

Every day represents a personal challenge for Cristal Rodríguez, who has three jobs, is getting a master's degree, takes care of her family, and generates educational content for social networks."It is quite exhausting, but life sometimes pushes us to take this kind of course, to have multiple facets or jobs to be able to build a salary". Cristal works as a psychologist and as a teacher at the same time.

Gabriel Quesada, from Cartago and 28 years old, divides his time between his job as a plastic arts teacher and his entrepreneurship as a producer of events, which consume him practically every day, but allow him to have the rhythm of life you want. As he says, both jobs are "24/7" and very demanding.

They are Costa Ricans and residents who need more than one source of income to survive or who opt for more than one job to face the rapid increase in inflation. This is also the case of a 31-year-old neighbor from Heredia, who is a single mother and works two jobs "to have a decent life."

Renting a nice house is no less than three hundred thousand Costa Rican colones (CRC 300.000) and that is already half of a good average salary. "With one job I only have enough for bills, food, and the house, so the other part-time job helps me have a little more quality of life."

Mónica Sebiani, a 24-year-old resident of San Pedro Montes de Oca, confirms how hard this lifestyle is. She had to quit one of her three jobs because her health began to deteriorate. After all, she didn't have enough time to exercise, she was tired every day, and she couldn't get a full night's sleep anymore because of everything she had to do.

Eugenia Gamboa, an occupational psychologist, has been allied for years with the researcher Pedro Gil Monte, from the University of Valencia in Spain, and in 2020 they carried out a study with 800 Costa Ricans in which they determined that 18% had "burnout" or burned syndrome, which is generated by prolonged exposure to high levels of stress at work.

The person who wrote the article, the journalist José Andrés Cespedes, fell short. He failed to mention two very important points, the enormous number of people who use the informal economy as a second or third job, and the thousands of people over 18 years of age who have found a favorable response to their needs for more income in the multi-level industry.

I have complete experience since 2004 in this industry at the hands of Jim Rohn at Herbalife Nutrition, Arthur J Williams at Citisoluciones, -the European division of Primerica-,
dōTERRA essential oils, Binance/other crypto exchanges, and finally with the reservation of luxury cruise ships and hotels with inCruises Club. You do not have bosses, you work for yourself, full-time or part-time, the business model has more than 100 years of proven success, it is legal, and I do not work with "pyramids". Earn what you work for.

If you want to know more: 1) how to generate income to replace lost income, 2) help you with inflation, or 3) increase your income for other reasons, without putting your health at risk, you can leave me a message on Twitter @vilagutr or buy some of my books available on Amazon.

Back in the green: the marker bitcoin ready to explode. Dogecoin pumps to the Moon.

Back in the green: the marker bitcoin ready to explode. Dogecoin pumps to the Moon.

After a streak of flat trading weeks, the crypto market saw a breakout as Bitcoin finally pushed above the $20,000 threshold.

Most of the altcoins outperformed Bitcoin, with the largest gains among the top cryptos seen in Ethereum’s ETH, Avalanche’s AVAX, and Cosmos’ ATOM, which all produced double-digit gains for the holders.

The Fear & Greed index was up slightly at the end of the week to its highest level of 34 points on Saturday.  At the moment of writing, the price of BTC 20.831,26 (Coinpaprika), +0,88%, +8,51% in a week, +6,82% in a month but still -66,32% in a year.

Moving forward, the bulls will set their hopes on the upcoming FOMC, where, if some analysts are to be believed, the Fed may take a dovish tone, highlighting how its efforts to fight inflation are bearing fruit. It remains to be seen if markets consider such a shift sufficient for a short-term sentiment change.

Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency branded after a viral dog meme from 2013, is up 114,15% over the past 7 days. DOGE is riding high on the news of Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter. Dogecoin PUMPS to the Moon...How High? Bitcoin (BTC) Rally Next? https://youtu.be/0zmbJr2-WyU

The price of the token often moves in lockstep with comments made by the Tesla CEO. Doge is up 51,54% in the last 24 hours after the SpaceX chief changed his Twitter bio to “Chief of Twit” on Wednesday. We will see how high it goes.

The End of an Era: Twitter will be the platform that I use, no more than Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, or Telegram.

What Will Change After Elon Musk Takes Over Control Of Twitter? https://youtu.be/SePs5Ao53bY

When something is free, you are the product. I'm tired of Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and telegram, I'm going to bet on the new private Twitter that is not listed on the stock market. From October 24, Twitter will be the platform that I use, no more than Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Telegram.

Twitter is a microblogging and social networking service owned by American company Twitter, Inc., on which users post and interact with messages known as "tweets". Registered users can post, like, and retweet tweets, while unregistered users only have a limited ability to read public tweets. Users interact with Twitter through browser or mobile frontend software, or programmatically via its APIs. Before April 2020, services were accessible via SMS. Tweets were initially restricted to 140 characters, but the limit was doubled to 280 for non-CJK languages in November 2017. Audio and video tweets remain limited to 140 seconds for most accounts.

I am sure that Elon Musk will make reasonable changes on this platform, which was already competing with Linkedin.

Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in March 2006 and launched in July of that year. Twitter, Inc. is based in San Francisco, California, and has more than 25 offices around the world. By 2012, more than 100 million users posted 340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion search queries per day. In 2013, it was one of the ten most-visited websites and has been described as "the SMS of the Internet". By the start of 2019, Twitter had more than 330 million monthly active users. In practice, the vast majority of tweets are written by a minority of users.

Among the CEOs of Nasdaq companies, I like the style of the South African and Canadian Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and SpaceX.

On April 25, 2022, the Twitter board of directors agreed to a $44 billion buyout by Elon Musk, making it one of the biggest deals to turn a company private. After a protracted period of controversy and legal battles, the deal closed on October 27. Some scholars, critics, and civil rights advocates consider that the acquisition could lead to radicalizati
on, especially among the far-right.

Musk, who said he was buying Twitter to ensure the “future of civilization,” is no stranger to cryptocurrency. Tesla is one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin—despite having sold 75% of its holdings. And Musk has frequently pumped the original meme coin, Dogecoin; in April, he said the cryptocurrency could be used for payments on Twitter.

The biggest cryptocurrency exchange Binance, is creating an internal team to focus on how crypto can help Twitter.  If you think like me and want to be more in touch, I invite you to connect via @vilagutr.

The conjunction of an energy revolution and energy crisis is 'unprecedented', and may bring about the emergence of a new global hegemony.

The conjunction of an energy revolution and energy crisis is 'unprecedented', and may bring about the emergence of a new global hegemony.

The twenty-first century has brought a powerful tide of geopolitical, economic, and democratic shocks. Their fallout has led central banks to create over $25 trillion of new fiat money, brought about a new age of geopolitical competition, destabilized the Middle East, ruptured the European Union, and exposed old political fault lines in the United States. Bitcoin was born in 2009, and now many Central Banks are assessing their Central Bank digital currencies (CBDC).

"Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century"
is the last audio book by Dr. Helen Thompson. It recounts three histories-one about geopolitics, one about the world economy, and one about western democracies-and explains how in the years of the political disorder prior to the pandemic the disruption in each became one big story. It shows how much of this turbulence originated in problems generated by fossil-fuel energies, especially oil.

Will an energy revolution bring the end of US hegemony? Dr. Helen Thompson and Times Radio, tells us today https://youtu.be/m3pXte2AyIg

Dr. Helen Thompson has been a Professor of Political Economy at the University of Cambridge since 1994. Her current research focuses on the political economy of energy, and the long history of democratic, economic and geopolitical upheavals in the 21st century.

She is a regular on Talking Politics and is a columnist for the New Statesman. You can read a good article in Spanish on https://nuso.org this month: "El frente de la transición energética". The original version of the article in English was published in Green, 9/2022, in an edition dedicated to the ecology of war. A preview in Spanish was published in El Grand Continent, 7/20/2022, with the title “The green war front”.

World Energy Outlook 2022 13 key findings: A look from the perspective of Latin America and Costa Rica.

World Energy Outlook WEO 2022, a 524 pages Report, https://youtu.be/40eu5sDxw0k. While governments around the world are discussing projects and taking action in Costa Rica under file 23,168, the Energy Commission of the Legislative Assembly began its ordinary session on Thursdays at 9 in the morning last July of this year. In its first session, it had no projects available - the call for projects corresponds to the Executive Power in the current session -, so the legislators dedicated themselves to talking outside the minutes about possible files that could make up the schedule. To say the name of the Costa Rican energy commission, one must first take a deep breath: «Special commission of the national energy sector and its relationship with the Regional Electricity Market, in charge of the analysis, investigation, study, opinion, and evaluation of pertinent recommendations and projects of law on energy, so that modern legislation is promoted, under with new developments and strengthens the sector, seeks to reduce rates and allows the country to advance on the path to sustainable development, competitiveness, and economic reactivation».

Will it be a setback for clean energy transitions or a catalyst for greater action? How might government responses shape energy markets? Which energy security risks lie ahead on the path to net zero emissions?

From 11:00:00 AM CEST until 11:59:13, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol and the co-lead authors of the report, Laura Cozzi and Tim Gould presented the report’s key findings during a live-streamed press event, https://www.iea.org/reports/world-energy-outlook-2022/key-findings.

1.- The global energy crisis sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is having far-reaching implications for households, businesses and entire economies, prompting short-term responses from governments as well as a deeper debate about the ways to reduce the risk of future disruptions and promote energy security. This is a global crisis, but Europe is the main theatre in which it is playing out, and natural gas is centre stage – especially during the coming northern hemisphere winter.  It seems to me that this view leaves all the countries of the South out.

2.- High energy prices are causing a huge transfer of wealth from consumers to producers, back to the levels seen in 2014 for oil, but entirely unprecedented for natural gas. High fuel prices account for 90% of the rise in the average costs of electricity generation worldwide, natural gas alone for more than 50%. The costs of renewables and carbon dioxide have played only a marginal role, underscoring that this is a crisis where energy transitions are the solution, rather than the problem. Oil cannot be consumed unprocessed, so many of the profits do not belong to oil producers but to oil refiners. Central America is a net importer of refined products and is also very vulnerable to climate change. Hence the importance of understanding that the problem is not Europe, it is not oil and it is not natural gas either, the problem is a global energy crisis.

3.- Price and economic pressures mean that the number of people without access to modern energy is rising for the first time in a decade. Around 75 million people who recently gained access to electricity are likely to lose the ability to pay for it, and 100 million people may revert to the use of traditional biomass for cooking. The energy crisis plus the pandemic has accentuated the difference between rich and poor people and countries. The rise of the dollar is an aggravating factor for developing or underdeveloped countries, which see their poverty and unemployment increase even more in a structural way.

4.- There remain huge uncertainties over how this energy crisis will evolve and for how long fossil fuel prices will remain elevated, and the risks of further energy disruption and geopolitical fragmentation are high. In all our scenarios, price pressures and a dim near-term outlook for the global economy feed through into lower energy demand than in last year’s Outlook. This is the reason why OPEC+ recently reduced its supply by two million barrels per day.

5.- The crisis provides a short-term boost to demand for oil and coal as consumers scramble for alternatives to high-priced gas. But the lasting gains from the crisis accrue to low-emissions sources, mainly renewables, but also nuclear in some cases, alongside faster progress with efficiency and electrification, e.g. electric vehicles. I do not agree with the higher demand for oil, but it is clear that many countries have returned to coal as the data says. Not all countries can go nuclear, at least in the South.

6.- In the Stated Policies Scenario (STEPS), global energy demand growth of around 1% per year to 2030 is met in aggregate almost entirely by renewables. Emerging markets and developing economies, such as India, see increases across a broader range of fuels and technologies, while the only sources to show growth in advanced economies to 2030 are low emissions. Brazil and Latin America are conspicuous by their absence.

7.- The cost advantages of mature clean energy technologies and the prospects for new ones, such as low-emissions hydrogen, are boosted by the Inflation Reduction Act in the United States, Europe’s increased push for clean energy, and other major new policies. The result is to turbo-charge the emerging global clean energy economy. None of these policies has been successful so far, the world is becoming more carbonized every day.

8.- The STEPS in this Outlook is the first World Energy Outlook (WEO) scenario based on prevailing policy settings that sees a definitive peak in global demand for fossil fuels. Coal demand peaks in the next few years, natural gas demand reaches a plateau by the end of the decade, and oil demand reaches a high point in the mid-2030s before falling slightly. From 80% today – a level that has been constant for decades – the share of fossil fuels in the global energy mix falls to less than 75% by 2030 and to just above 60% by mid‑century. In the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS), the drive to meet climate pledges in full sends demand for all fossil fuels into decline by 2030.  For as long as I can remember, and I am over sixty years old, a peak has been predicted, the reality is that no one has a crystal ball to guarantee the decade, much less the year when it will occur. That is why countries rich in oil and gas, like my native Venezuela, have a window for their development. That is why OPEC now considers the opinion of more countries and makes decisions together in OPEC+.

9.- With the loss of its largest export market in Europe, Russia faces the prospect of a much-diminished role in international energy affairs. 2021 proves to be a high-water mark for Russian export flows. Its share of internationally traded gas, which stood at 30% in 2021, falls to 15% by 2030 in the STEPS and to 10% in the APS. Importers in China have been actively contracting for liquefied natural gas, and there is no room in China’s projected gas balance for another large-scale pipeline from Russia.  As an oil expert with 40 years of experience, I disagree. Many countries that belong to OPEC + can make agreements with Russia and with its clients such as China and India, to name just two. More important than the oil-producing countries are the oil refiners. Modern refineries, in addition to being more environmentally friendly, are more flexible in their diet. Costa Rica lost a great opportunity to have a modern refinery in association with China due to the energy populism of the last four administrations.

10.- Energy-related CO2 emissions rebounded to 36.6 Gt in 2021, the largest ever annual rise in emissions. In the STEPS, they reach a plateau of around 37 Gt before falling slowly to 32 Gt in 2050, a trajectory that would lead to a 2.5 °C rise in global average temperatures by 2100. This is around 1 °C lower than implied by the baseline trajectory prior to the Paris Agreement, indicating the progress that has been made since then. But much more needs to be done. In the APS, emissions peak in the mid‑2020s and fall to 12 Gt in 2050, resulting in a projected global median temperature rise in 2100 of 1.7 °C. In the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 (NZE) Scenario, CO2 emissions fall to 23 Gt in 2030 and to zero in 2050, a trajectory consistent with limiting the temperature increase to less than 1.5 °C in 2100. The increase in emissions in air and water pollution should be addressed more because of its relationship with the health of humanity and many species that are disappearing, such as insects and especially bees. In Costa Rica, there is a disproportionate increase in cases of children from zero to two years of age who are having respiratory problems with no apparent explanation. Meanwhile, Costa Rica's air quality standards are equivalent to Euro 5, while in advanced countries the Euro 7 standard is being discussed.

11.- Planned increases in global clean energy manufacturing capacity provide a leading indicator of the potential for rapid increases in deployment. In the case of heat pumps, the current and planned manufacturing capacity is below the deployment levels projected in the APS. But announced global manufacturing capacity for electrolysers and solar PV modules in 2030 is sufficient not only to reach APS deployment levels but to go beyond them. Again it seems that the analysis applies more from the perspective of the developed countries of the North, and not of those of the South.

12.- One point common to each scenario is the rising share of electricity in global final energy consumption. From 20% today, this increases in each scenario, reaching more than 50% by mid-century in the NZE Scenario. This is associated with a huge overall increase in global electricity demand – with the bulk of this growth coming from emerging markets and developing economies – and the need for constant vigilance from policymakers to a range of risks to electricity security, in particular the ever-increasing need for flexible operation of power systems. Latin America, including Central America, is wasting the great potential of generating electricity and exporting it. In Costa Rica, a country that generates almost all of its electricity in a green way, hydroelectric power has been increased to the detriment of less problematic ones, such as geothermal, wind, and solar. Some pioneers see an opportunity to use surplus electricity that would be lost in mining cryptocurrencies like bitcoin (BTC).

13.- The world has not been investing enough in energy in recent years, a fact that left the energy system much more vulnerable to the sort of shocks seen in 2022. A smooth and secure energy transition will require a major uptick in clean energy investment flows. Getting on track for the NZE Scenario will require a tripling in spending on clean energy and infrastructure by 2030, alongside a shift towards much higher investment in emerging markets and developing economies. What is more serious was that refining capacity was disinvested globally and now inflation has taken over the world. If the RECOPE-SORESCO project had continued in Costa Rica, the 60 mbd refinery in the Province of Limón would have been paid for much sooner, and we Costa Ricans would be earning a refining margin that has ranged between 10 to 30 dollars per barrel. For this reason, on February 2, 2015, I presented a proposal to the Rector of the University of Costa Rica, Dr. Henning Jensen Pennington, to lower fuel prices and increase energy security. To this day, 7 years, 8 months, and 25 days, a total of 2,824 days, I am still waiting for the answer. The worst thing about Costa Rica is its Judicial Power. The second worst has been its populist presidents in energy and health, and the third worst has been many of its deputies. Still, we are the country PURA VIDA.

The Principality of Reuss-Greiz: An independent and highly industrialized state disappeared.

The Principality of Reuss-Greiz: An independent and highly industrialized state disappeared. Feliz y Saludable October 27, 2022, San Jose Costa Rica, rafaelvilagut@gmail.com Not to be confused with Reus in the province of Tarragona, Spain.

States are like living beings, they are born, grow and then many disappear, or what is worse are failed or unviable states. Today we will combine history with genealogy, two of my passions.

The Principality of Reuss-Greiz (German: Fürstentum Reuß-Greiz), called the Principality of the Reuss Elder Line (German: Fürstentum Reuß älterer Linie) after 1848, was a sovereign state in modern Germany, ruled by members of the House of Reuss. The Counts Reuss of Greiz, Lower-Greiz, and Upper-Greiz (German: Reuß Zu Greiz, Untergreiz und Obergreiz) were elevated to princely status in 1778 and thereafter bore the title of Prince Reuss, Elder Line, or Prince Reuss of Greiz.

Similarly to the more numerous Reuss Junior Line, the male members of this house were all named "Heinrich", in honor of Emperor Heinrich VI, who had benefited the family. They were numbered sequentially by birth, rather than by reign, with the last series beginning with Heinrich I (born 1693) and ending with Heinrich XXIV (1878–1927).

This State had an area of 317 Km2 and over 72,000 inhabitants in 1910. In the 21st century, small nations, especially islands, around the world are in danger of disappearing due to climate change and the rise in the level of the oceans and seas.

Reuss (Major Line) was a highly industrialized state. The textile industry was of great importance. In 1864 the first mechanical spinning machine was introduced. In 1900 there were nearly 11,000 machines in a small state of just over 45,000 people. Machinery, paper, and porcelain were also manufactured.

Prince Heinrich XV of Reuss-Plauen Wikipedia audio article, https://youtu.be/lvRmNIllnEA

Prince Heinrich XV of Reuss-Plauen, Viceroy of Lombardy-Venetia (22 February 1751 – 30 August 1825) was the fourth of six sons born into the reigning family of the Principality of Reuss. At the age of fifteen, he joined the army of Habsburg Austria, and later fought against Ottoman Turkey. During the French Revolutionary Wars, he became a general officer and saw extensive service. He commanded a corps during the Napoleonic Wars. From 1801 until his death, he was the Proprietor (Inhaber) of an Austrian infantry regiment.

Prince Reuss came to the attention of the Austrian emperor in his thirties. After distinguishing himself in the battle against the Turks, the emperor promoted him to command an infantry regiment. He served against the French First Republic in the Flanders Campaign and received a promotion to general. The year 1796 found him leading Austrian troops against the army of Napoleon Bonaparte. In the following year, he commanded a division.

In 1799 Prince Reuss fought against France in Germany and Switzerland. He led a division in northern Italy during the 1805 war. In the Danube campaign of 1809, he started out leading a division and ended the war in command of a corps. In 1813, he led a successful diplomatic effort to cause the Kingdom of Bavaria to change sides and join the Allies against Napoleon. Into his seventies, he served Austria in various military and civil positions.

The contribution of Christiana Figueres to the decarbonization of Costa Rica and the World.

It is estimated that by 2050, the global population will rise to 9.7 billion, from 7.7 billion in 2019. The global economy is expected to more than double over the same period. Urbanization, automation, and the rise in living standards will increase the demand for energy globally. More than half of the world’s population now lives in cities and towns, and the United Nations projects that the global urban population will increase to around 68% by 2050.

If we continue with business as usual, this scale of expansion will accelerate climate change, and degrade the quality of air and water upon which all living organisms depend. To protect the environment without tempering economic growth, we need to redouble our commitment to reducing the consumption of energy and natural resources.

Can positivity help tackle the global climate emergency? The Stream, Al Jazeera English https://youtu.be/Mmn9JxPCpyI

As the global energy transition from fossil fuels continues, the importance of diversifying green energy portfolios grows increasingly prevalent. Today, waste heat recovery is a competitive choice compared to other renewable energy sources, and offers several advantages over solar and wind power. With more than 20 years of experience in the power industry, Exergy – one of the leading providers of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems used to produce electricity from waste heat resources such as industrial processes and gas turbines and engines – offers some insight into the benefits waste heat recovery has over other renewables.

Growing numbers of people are experiencing climate anxiety as scientists, campaigners, and diplomats speak with increasing alarm about the global climate breakdown's unparalleled scale. News reports cover the impact of extreme weather and the loss of biodiversity.

Yet at this watershed moment for the world, can positivity and the celebration of seemingly small environmental wins energize collective efforts to tackle the crisis we face? Former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres keeps that question in mind while hosting the Outrage + Optimism podcast, highlighting the progress being made by campaigners, scientists, NGOs, and elected officials in the pursuit of a sustainable future – in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

In this episode of Feliz y Saludable, Christiana Figueres from Costa Rica, and three other special guests at The Stream, will talk about how a spirit of optimism can galvanize climate action and create groundbreaking results.

The truth is that the Costa Rican official Leading the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Karen Christiana Figueres Olsen, has been neither efficient nor effective in reversing the carbonization trend in her native Costa Rica. On the contrary, Costa Rica uses more fossil fuels every day than ever before, as in the rest of the world, surpassing the barrier of one hundred million barrels of oil per day.

After her tenure as Executive Secretary, Figueres worked as convenor of Mission 2020 and served as chair of the Advisory Board of The Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change. She is a founder of the Global Optimism group, co-author of the book The Future We Choose, and co-host of the popular podcast Outrage and Optimism.

Other activities include:
Chair of The Earth shot Prize Foundation 2021–present
B Team Leader (since 2016),
Impossible Foods, Member of the Board of Directors (2021).
Acciona, Member of the Board of Directors (since 2017).
Acciona Energía, Member of the Board of Directors (since 2021).
Eni, Member of the Advisory Board (since 2017).
Formula E, Co-Chair of the Global Advisory Board (since 2017).
International Olympic Committee (IOC), Member of the Sustainability and Legacy Commission.
World Resources Institute (WRI), Member of the Board of Directors.
Inter-American Dialogue, Member (since 1995).

Figueres was born in San José, Costa Rica. Her father, José Figueres Ferrer, was President of Costa Rica three times. Figueres' mother, Karen Olsen Beck, served as Costa Rican Ambassador to Israel in 1982 and was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1990 to 1994. The couple had four children. Figueres' older brother José Figueres Olsen, was also President of Costa Rica (1994–1998).

As part of her studies in anthropology, she lived in Bribri, Talamanca, a remote indigenous village in the Southeastern plateau of Costa Rica for one year. She then went to the London School of Economics for a master's degree in social anthropology and graduated in 1981. Figueres' daughter Naima von Ritter-Figueres was born in Guatemala in March 1988, and daughter Yihana von Ritter-Figueres was born in Washington DC in December 1989.

The five million Costa Ricans would feel happier if the initiatives to measure air pollution were put to the test in her native Costa Rica, and if she had opposed the president's decree to postpone indefinitely the new air quality standard in Costa Rica, which has been in force in the United States since 2010 and in Europe since 2014.

Emotion will not tackle the global climate emergency, only action will, and we see very little of that from the government, corporations, the media, and society in general.

With a 2nd U.K. prime minister in weeks, demand grows for a general election. Watch the Full first speech of Rishi Sunak as the UK's Prime Minister.

U.K Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Here is the latest on Britain’s new government. In Sunak’s top cabinet ministers, an emphasis on continuity. Some Britons fear Sunak is too rich to understand working-class suffering. The Sunak government is set to lay out its economic plan in six days. With a 2nd U.K. prime minister in weeks, demand grows for a general election.

Watch the Full first speech of Rishi Sunak as the UK's Prime Minister.

Good morning, I have just been to Buckingham Palace and accepted His Majesty the King’s invitation to form a government in his name. It is only right to explain why I am standing here as your new prime minister. Right now our country is facing a profound economic crisis. The aftermath of Covid still lingers. Putin’s war in Ukraine has destabilized energy markets and supply chains the world over. I want to pay tribute to my predecessor, Liz Truss. She was not wrong to want to improve growth in this country — it is a noble aim — and I admired her restlessness to create change. But some mistakes were made — not borne of ill will or bad intentions, quite the opposite, in fact — but mistakes nonetheless. And I have been elected as leader of my party, and your prime minister, in part, to fix them. And that work begins immediately.  I will place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government’s agenda. This will mean difficult decisions to come. But you saw me during Covid, doing everything I could, to protect people and businesses, with schemes like furlough. There are always limits, more so now than ever, but I promise you this: I will bring that same compassion to the challenges we face today.  The government I lead will not leave the next generation, your children and grandchildren, with a debt to settle that we were too weak to pay ourselves. I will unite our country, not with words, but with action. I will work day in and day out to deliver for you. This government will have integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level. Trust is earned. And I will earn yours.  I will always be grateful to Boris Johnson for his incredible achievements as prime minister, and I treasure his warmth and generosity of spirit. And I know he would agree that the mandate my party earned in 2019 is not the sole property of any one individual, it is a mandate that belongs to and unites all of us. And the heart of that mandate is our manifesto. I will deliver on its promise: a stronger N.H.S., better schools, safer streets, control of our borders, protecting our environment, supporting our armed forces, leveling up and building an economy that embraces the opportunities of Brexit, where businesses invest, innovate and create jobs. I understand how difficult this moment is. After the billions of pounds it cost us to combat Covid, after all the dislocation that caused in the midst of a terrible war that must be seen successfully to its conclusions, I fully appreciate how hard things are. And I understand, too, that I have work to do to restore trust after all that has happened. All I can say is that I am not daunted. I know the high office I have accepted, and I hope to live up to its demands. But when the opportunity to serve comes along, you cannot question the moment, only your willingness. So I stand here before you ready to lead our country into the future, to put your needs above politics, to reach out and build a government that represents the very best traditions of my party. Together we can achieve incredible things. We will create a future worthy of the sacrifices so many have made and fill tomorrow, and everyday thereafter with hope. Thank you.

Rishi Sunak born on 12 May 1980 is a British politician who has served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party since October 2022. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020. He has been a member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond (Yorks) since 2015.

As Chancellor, Sunak was pushing ahead with a new law that would pave the way for stablecoins to be used for everyday payments, despite fears from the Bank of England about the financial stability of the technology. In April 2022, Sunak ordered the Royal Mint to create a UK government-backed non-fungible token (NFT) to be issued by the summer of 2022.

Sunak was appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom by King Charles III on 25 October 2022, making him the first British Asian prime minister, as well as the first Hindu prime minister.  Sunak is also the richest person to hold the office.

Sunak is a Hindu and took his oath as an MP at the House of Commons on the Bhagavad Gita. In August 2009, he married Akshata Murty, the daughter of the Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy, the founder of the technology company Infosys. Murty owns a 0.91% stake—valued at about $900m (£746m) in April 2022—in Infosys, making her one of the wealthiest women in Britain.

Sunak and Murty met while studying at Stanford University; they have two daughters.  Murty is a director of her father's investment firm, Catamaran Ventures. They own Kirby Sigston Manor in the village of Kirby Sigston, North Yorkshire, as well as a mews house in Earl's Court in central London, a flat on Old Brompton Road, South Kensington, and a penthouse apartment on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California.  He was previously a governor of the East London Science School.  Sunak has a Labrador called Nova and is a cricket, tennis, and horse, racing enthusiast.

Rishi Sunak is the first person of color and the first Hindu to become prime minister of Britain — a milestone for a nation that is more and more ethnically diverse but also roiled by occasional anti-immigrant fervor. Economic Challenges: Sunak already has experience steering Britain’s public finances as chancellor of the Exchequer. That won’t make tackling the current crisis any easier.

The rise and fall of Liz Truss offers some lessons. Lifelong Allowance: As a former prime minister, Ms. Truss is eligible for a taxpayer-funded annual payout for the rest of her life. Some say she shouldn’t be allowed to receive it.  What do you think?

Poverty is on the rise in Cuba.

Poverty is on the rise in Cuba. October 25, 2022. Blog Feliz y Saludable, San Jose Costa Rica. Cuba: High prices, lines and shortages | DW Documentary https://youtu.be/Ya46bmRa0os

Poverty is on the rise. Even the famous ingenuity of the Cuban people is reaching its limits as they try to cope with the day-to-day effects of the crisis. Images of bygone revolutionaries are fading in the streets of the capital, Havana, and all over the island. Official voices continue to broadcast the state’s ideology, but ordinary people are losing hope that things will improve.

Cuba has been subject to sanctions for decades. Despite recent attempts at reform, the country is increasingly isolated and economically dependent. A currency reform enacted in 2021 is also causing major problems, with inflation soaring and prices skyrocketing. Food is scarce, and lines in front of the few state-run stores are getting longer and longer.

In Cuba, the socialist project begun by the revolutionary hero and former president Fidel Castro is teetering on the verge of failure. The nation is sinking deeper into crisis, with many people’s daily lives marred by shortages of food, medicine, and electricity.

This is what awaits the other countries whose governments are advised by the Cubans like Venezuela and Nicaragua.

This is why we Latin Americans must be very jealous when governments make agreements with Cuba, be they for education, medicine, or worse, for the armed forces.

So that there are no excuses, this video is available on the German television channel in Spanish and other languages.

China, UK, Japan, EU, The USA trilemma: growth, inflation, and financial stability.

China, UK, Japan, EU, The USA trilemma: growth, inflation, and financial stability. Bond yields around the world coming down on growth concerns, https://youtu.be/sjzB_kb3C4o Mohamed El-Erian, Allianz, and Gramercy Advisor and president of Queens College, Cambridge, joins 'Squawk Box' to discuss market activity around the world, financial stability concerns behind the Fed slowdown, and global currency tensions.

What Are Growth Rates?

Growth rates refer to the percentage change of a specific variable within a particular period. Growth rates can either be positive or negative depending on whether the size of the variable is increasing or decreasing over time. Growth rates were first used by biologists studying population sizes, but have since been used in studying economic activity, corporate management, or investment returns.

What Is Inflation?

Inflation is a rise in prices, which can be translated as the decline of purchasing power over time. The rate at which purchasing power drops can be reflected in the average price increase of a basket of selected goods and services over some time. The rise in prices often expressed as a percentage, means that a unit of currency effectively buys less than it did in prior periods. Inflation can be contrasted with deflation, which occurs when prices decline and purchasing power increases.

What Is the Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR)?

The Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR) is a semiannual report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that assesses the stability of global financial markets and emerging-market financing. It is released twice per year, in April and October.

Natural disasters in Central America due to climate change are more sudden and frequent.

Costa Rica lies in one of the most vulnerable places on the planet. La Nacion San Jose Sunday, October 23, 2022 by Juan F. Lara.

Marco Solis was a small boy when his parents started the small Tamalera Flor de Aserrí business 25 years ago. He is 30 today.

La Flor de Aserrí
is located near the Cañas River, the same river that last September 16 tore down walls, and firewood knockers and also flooded the kitchen. It was not so bad for them, since the fury of the downpours left 300 homeless and 170 houses damaged that day.

"The truth is that it rains harder now and in shorter periods, I had noticed. In Aserrí sometimes it rains and sometimes it doesn't, but now with so many tropical waves it is raining much harder and when it rains it is serious", Solis summed up.

In the last two months, Costa Rica has suffered an onslaught of landslides, floods, and waterspouts...

Are these disasters related to climate change? The answer is yes.

Costa Rica lies in one of the world's regions most vulnerable zone to extreme natural phenomena due to the impact of climate change. It is repeatedly affected by droughts, heavy rains, hurricanes, and the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon.

These conditions that generate emergencies and natural disasters will intensify, as warned by abundant scientific studies carried out by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Last July, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) launched the report "The State of the Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean 2021" which warns of the profound repercussions that these phenomena have on the civilian population.

"Increasing sea level rise and continued warming of the oceans are expected to continue to affect livelihoods, tourism, health, food, energy and water security in coastal areas, particularly in the small islands and Central American countries,"
reveals the publication.

Tightening financial and weather conditions across the globe.

FELIZ Y SALUDABLE, Tightening financial and weather conditions across the globe. San Jose Costa Rica Sunday, October 23, 2022, rafaelvilagut@gmail.com Is the tremendous global debt default coming? | Business Beyond https://youtu.be/xxBdL8LAAhI

More than half of the world’s low-income countries are dangerously close to debt distress – if they’re not there already. The example of Sri Lanka has shown the social unrest that defaulting on debt can trigger, forcing people to go without essential imports.

Average gross government debt in emerging markets is up by almost 10 percentage points since 2019 reaching an estimated 64 percent of GDP by the end of 2021, with wide variations across countries.

Drought is among the causes of hunger and malnutrition, decreasing agricultural output, and poor nutrition. Many deaths caused in children are due to hunger situations, and one in four children faces stunted growth. All this hunger and malnutrition may be responsible for the reduction in agricultural productivity caused due to the drought situations affecting food security.

The global Hunger Index has been accelerating due to under-nutrition and under-5 deaths. Drought has been covering more than 20% of the world's agricultural areas, leading to significantly less food production than what is required for consumption. Drought reduces soil fertility and adversely affects soil biological activity reducing the inherent capacity of the soil to support vegetation.

Recent droughts have greatly affected people’s lives, even beyond causing poverty and hunger. Drought may have substantial financial consequences across the globe it may cause a severe impact on the world economy.

On the other hand, recent floods in Pakistan, Venezuela, Central America, and the Caribbean, even in the US have greatly affected people’s economies.

Disasters in Costa Rica due to climate change are more abrupt and frequent. The country is in one of the areas of the world most exposed to floods, droughts and hurricanes and recent rains are responsible for remembering it.

This is when the importance of decarbonization becomes relevant to protect humanity and the planet against climate change and increasingly serious natural events that directly affect people's finances and well-being.

The decarbonization plan that was launched with great fanfare in 2018, by the now former president Carlos Alvarado, has not only been a complete failure, but the country has regressed in terms of environment and energy security.

Rich and poor, North and South, East and West, countries at war or peace, we are all affected by tightening financial and weather conditions across the globe; the solution to these substantial problems must come from all 8 billion people.

I wish you, subscribers and readers, a happy and healthy start to the week.

Gold is money. Everything else is credit.

Janet Yellen Just Revealed New Plan (MMT Is Back) https://youtu.be/VgCRj5d4Sqs

"Gold is money. Everything else is credit." John Pierpont Morgan. San José de Costa Rica, October 22, 2022, rafaelvilagut@gmail.com Feliz y Saludable.

The risks of the following U.S. Financial Crisis are increasing. The scope of the crisis includes decreasing values of assets, a recession caused by government policies, decreases in the value of existing bonds, and significant social stress fueled by political polarization after the next 2022 midterm elections.

A review of policy actions and economic trends in the first two quarters of 2022 verifies that the risks of a crisis are increasing and nearing a tipping point from the post-midterm election to the mid-2023 period.

Ironically, in the 1780s James Madison declared that financial and economic problems were increasing stress, which threatened the stability of the U.S. In that case, the political struggles were primarily between “the class with property and the class without property.”

Much has changed in 240+ years, but history has a strange habit of repeating itself. Many people believe that concrete actions need to be taken before the U.S. reaches a point of no return.

In June, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated: “she was wrong in 2021 when she said that inflation only posed a small risk". Now, Yellen's new proposal seems to be to pay off one credit card with another.

This video ¿A different Central Bank? is terrifying because, for the credit control mechanism to affect demand, they would need to ensure no after-market where people might resell credit for alternate purposes using their collateral to back it. This would mean everyone would ultimately need to own nothing to be effective.

With the 8 billion souls of November 2022, we will witness substantial changes at the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department, with digital currencies issued by central banks, financial engineering to control inflation, or both.

Xi Jinping becomes more empowered: Li Keqiang and Wang Yang are not in the new leadership line-up as President Xi tightens his grip on power.

CPC congress: Mr. Li Keqiang, Mr. Wang Yang not in new leadership line-up as President Xi tightens grip on power. October 22, 2022, San José de Costa Rica rafaelvilagut@gmail.com

China's censors blocked CNN while reporting this surprising moment https://youtu.be/1HQ_AVAJlKE Former Chinese leader Mr. Hu Jintao was escorted out of the closing ceremony of Saturday's Communist Party Congress in Beijing.

Four of the current seven supreme leaders ruling China, including Premier Li Keqiang and fourth-ranked Wang Yang, are to retire in a significant reshuffle that will allow President Xi Jinping to surround himself with his allies.

Mr. Li’s and Mr. Wang’s names did not appear in a list of the newly elected 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Saturday at the end of a week-long party congress. The new cohort of leaders – 205 full members and 171 alternate members – come from the top rungs of the party, military, and government.

They will on Sunday 23 elect among them the higher power 25-member Politburo and its elite Standing Committee made up of seven men.

They will also elect members of the Central Military Commission (CMC), the country’s military high command, who are also drawn from the same pool.

Neither Mr. Li, who is No. 2 to President Xi in the current Politburo Standing Committee, nor Mr. Wang has reached retirement age. Both are 67.

Third-ranked Li Zhanshu, 72, and seventh-ranked Han Zheng, 68, are also out of the new Central Committee, which means they will fully retire. They had been expected to step down.

An informal retirement norm, better known as the “seven up, eight down” rule, sets the age limit at 67 for old and new members of the Standing Committee and the wider Politburo at the start of a new term. Politicians aged 68 or older are disqualified.

Mr. Wang was hotly tipped to take over Mr. Li as the next premier, but the latter was said to have asked for retirement, citing health reasons.

Central Committee members were voted in on Saturday 22 by around 2,300 delegates attending the once-every-five-years congress, who represent the 96 million members of the CPC.

Delegates also elected all the members of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the party’s anti-corruption watchdog.

Based on the list of newly elected members, Guangdong party chief Li Xi – an ally of Mr. Xi – is the most likely candidate to become the next anti-corruption czar, to be named on Sunday at the new Central Committee’s first meeting. This will also give him a seat on the new Standing Committee.

The retirement of Mr. Li and Mr. Wang is seen as a blow to the Communist Youth League faction, to which the two belong.

Other leaders who will step down include economic czar Mr. Liu He, 70; top diplomat Mr. Yang Jiechi, 72; vice-premier Mr. Sun Chunlan, 72; head of the Communist Party’s organization department Mr. Chen Xi, 69; and former Mr. Xinjiang party chief Mr. Chen Quanguo, 66.

“It’s very rare for any leader to stay in the Politburo for four terms, or 20 years, with the paramount leader being the exception. Mr. Li and Mr. Wang have already been in the Politburo for three terms, so it is difficult for them to stay on,” said Dr. Chen Gang, a senior research fellow at the East Asian Institute in Singapore.

Their departure, along with the retirement of Mr. Li Zhanshu and Mr. Han, gives room to Mr. Xi Jinping to stack the Standing Committee with his allies.

He is expected to secure a rare third term as general secretary of the party, and chairman of the CMC on Sunday. Amendments to the party constitution adopted at the congress on Saturday have also further strengthened his authority.

Think differently if you want to win: Where to put the money you earn regularly?

The meteoric rise of Bitcoin (BTC) has led to heightened investment, academic, commercial, numismatic, transactional, and practitioner interest in that cryptocurrency, as well as in the growing array of such instruments worldwide. This leads to an accentuated need for an examination of the historical evolution of Bitcoin as the seminal instrument in the development of cryptocurrencies, and this speech gives us some clues. Michael Saylor Keynote Speech @ The 2022 Atlas Society Gala, https://youtu.be/ZcjFrIMw2sI

In Costa Rica, the "Pura Vida Ticos" are defenseless with a populist president Rodrigo Chaves-Robles and an Ombudsman Catalina Crespo-Sancho.

Giving the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) all the powers to authorize and supervise the new power plants in Costa Rica, is what the government is proposing. As a possible governing body, the MINAE would assume the responsibility that for decades has been in the hands of the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE GROUP), of deciding on the construction of electricity generating plants.

Collegiate professionals are in crisis in Costa Rica. Among the innumerable populist measures, eleven executive decrees to eliminate the minimum fees of several professional associations were announced by the president on August 10 and signed during the independence commemoration activities on September 15, but it was not until October 7 that began to be published in La Gaceta.

Several ministers, deputy ministers, and executive presidents of the government have had to resign, due to corruption issues or simply having opinions that differ from that of the president. The most emblematic case is that of the President of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS).

Finally, the health of five million inhabitants in Central American Switzerland is at risk because, using government officials, the president decreed last July to postpone an air quality standard that has been in force since 2014 in Europe and since 2010 in the United States.

Rodrigo Chaves does not accept opponents or criticism from the deputies of the Legislative Power or the Magistrates of the Judicial Power, in Costa Rica after May 2022, we must follow like sheep the criteria of the elected president, of a party that never had a presence in The congress.

After having studied the blockchain and bitcoin for more than 5,000 hours, I am convinced that we cannot depend on banks, international corporations, or governments, whether they are "full democracies" like Costa Rica, or dictatorships like Nicaragua, Cuba, or Venezuela.

Forbidden to postpone actions for adequate air control management (ACM) in Latin America.

This is your brain on air pollution | María Neira https://youtu.be/utiLrnvawQQ

Air pollution knows no borders -- even in your own body, says public health expert María Neira. In this startling TED video, she describes how the microscopic particles and chemicals you breathe affect all your major organs (including your brain) and calls on both the public and those in power to take action to stop the sources of pollution.

It is happening in Costa Rica, the government by decree has already delayed the European regulation Euro 6 arguing that it made imported refined oil fuels more expensive.

Air pollution is now recognised by governments, international institutions and civil society as a major global public health risk factor except in Costa Rica Ministry of Health

The health burden of air pollution is large: 509. 000 premature deaths every year in Europe and serious aggravations of heart and lung diseases that affect millions of patients, both children and adults. The European Environmental Agency estimated that in 2018 there were 417. 000 premature deaths attributable to particulate matter with diameter <2.5 µm (PM2.5), 55 000 to NO2, and 20 600 to O3 in Europe. In addition, 4 805 800 years of life lost could be attributed to PM2.5, 623 600 to NO2, and 246 700 to O3.

This “silent killer” is one the most important determinants of health, surpassed only by high blood pressure, tobacco use and poor diet. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has raised concerns about whether air pollution can increase the severity of disease and risk of death after infection, as well as facilitate the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Chronic lung disease patients are at the epicenter of the current crisis, as they are more vulnerable to both the adverse effects of a SARS-CoV-2 infection and air pollution exposure, as well as their possible interactions. At the same time, the lockdown measures to control the spread of COVID-19 brought historical short-term reductions in air pollution levels around the globe, and increased general public interest and demand for clean air policies.

The COVID-19 pandemic, an emerging infectious disease probably caused by a spill over from animals, and its possible interactions with air pollution, is an existential reminder that we are a part of a larger ecosystem, and that human health is closely connected with the health of our environment and planet.
