Nobody has ever explained cruising and how it works in this particular and detailed way.
The advantage to a cruise line organized/sanctioned excursion is that if the excursion is late getting to back to the ship because of traffic, the ship will wait for the excursion to return. If you get off the ship and wander around on your and miss the ship's departure time... then it is your problem to deal with. The ship will not wait.
