Nicaragua has three regions which vary greatly in weather, geography, and population. These three areas are the Pacific Region, Central Region, and the Caribbean Region consisting of two sub-regions: the Autonomous North Atlantic Region (RAAN), and the Autonomous South Atlantic Region (RAAS).Situated at the very center of the Americas, Nicaragua is an ideal place to visit for anyone looking for something uniquely different and adventurous. In the heart of Central America, Nicaragua truly deserves the descriptive nickname of “The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes.” Visitors to Nicaragua are able to enjoy the natural beauty of dozens of volcanoes, rivers, and lakes, as well as two oceans.

Nicaragua offers an immense variety of activities such as visiting the Spanish colonial cities of Granada and Leon, surfing world-class waves, hiking up volcanoes, and zip-lining through the forest canopy. Ever-popular is the kayaking on the calm waters of Lake Cocibolca, also known as Lake Nicaragua, an immense lake with over three hundred islands and home to the only fresh water sharks in the world. Nicaragua is especially great for those interested in eco-tourism, and is home to a rich diversity of animal and plant species.

The “Coffee Route” is located in the northern part of the country. It is a fascinating, alternative experience that lets you take an up-close look at coffee farms, and explore the countryside along the way. On this route there are opportunities to hike, mountain-bike, sightsee, horseback ride, and observe countless animals in their natural habitat.

The mixture of cultural traditions has generated substantial diversity in art and literature, particularly the latter given the literary contributions of Nicaraguan poets and writers, such as Rubén Darío.  From 1927 until 1933, rebel general Augusto César Sandino led a sustained guerrilla war first against the Conservative regime and subsequently against the U.S. Marines, whom he fought for over five years.

Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional Augusto C. Sandino) (IATA: MGAICAO: MNMG) or ACS is the main joint civil-military public international airport in Managua, Nicaragua named after Nicaraguan revolutionary Augusto Nicolás Sandino and located in the City's 6th ward, known locally as Distrito 6.

In the southern part of the country, the “Water Route” follows the 120-mile long San Juan River as it snakes its way between Nicaragua and its neighbor to the south, Costa Rica, and finally flows into the Caribbean Sea. The area known as “El Castillo” is the widest part of the river, and is surrounded by islands bursting with wildlife and vegetation.

The unparalleled natural beauty of Nicaragua is further enriched by its strong cultural heritage and legacy of warm and friendly hospitality. Nicaragua’s multi-ethnic and multi-lingual people take great pride in their culture and their country, and welcome visitors with open arms.

According The Costa Rica Star, 280 thousand Costa Rican tourists have visited Nicaragua this year (July 6, 2017), an increase of over 25% according to the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute (Intur).  With this number of visitors Costa Rica is the country that has sent more tourists to Nicaragua surpassing the number of tourists from the United States and Honduras that used to take the first places.

"The increase on the number of tourist is related with the low prices of products and services in Nicaragua.  During the first five months of this year, Nicaragua received a total of 742,731 tourists in total, 26.2% more than for the same period of 2016. 63% of the tourists that visit Nicaragua come from Central America."

"Nicaragua’s best beaches like Tola and San Juan del Sur are among the preferred destinations for Costa Rican tourists."  San Juan del Sur, set beside a crescent-shaped bay, was a popular resting place for gold prospectors headed to California in the 1850s. Correspondingly, San Juan del Sur served as a hub for Cornelius Vanderbilt Lines.  A statue of the Christ of the Mercy sits above town on the northern end of the bay. The Mirador del Cristo de la Misericordia sits at on one of the highest points on the bay and is one of the tallest Jesus statue in the world.
